Whatever points may have been scored by the spurious quote and its propagation are negated by the unintended consequences of the thinking behind the quote, as explained in the Snopes article above.

Sorry, Team Blue, Team Red hasn’t cornered the market on short-sighted distortions. I think, on reflection, the critical reader can see how such denial of slaves’ personal awareness of their affliction is just more of the same imperial, noble white thought that put them in chains to begin with. We need to be better than this.

We’re not talking Buzzfeed level’s of hit or miss (recently, a bit of a miss according to Mueller’s office). We’re talking honest to goodness investigative reporting. Neither you nor I would be allowed to roam the streets freely were we to engage in business practices like these at the small potatoes level.
